Is this the day that alternative music died? Was there ever REALLY an alternative scene?
Two questions in one, my music fiends…
Ok. Checked out rollingstone.com today – listened to their review of the new Smashing Pumpkins CD. During this review, one of the two guys said that alternative music is dead. Its dead? Was it ever alive?
Now, I grew up during the 1990’s grunge and alt phase, never really considering alt music to be different. Maybe its because Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, The Verve, and other big bands of that scene sounded like music I grew up on… Like Pink Floyd, MC5, The Ramones, The Clash, Queen, Neil Young, Syd Barrett, Boston, Led Zepplin and the Beatles (but w/ more distortion)…
But is Radiohead alt rock? Out of the bunch of bands for those days, this band (to me) is still anti-radio friendly… After Pablo Honey, they always stayed away from writing songs for their PR guys…

Alternative rock began in the 1980s as a then-aptly titled alternative to the mainstream rock trends of the day, with American bands such as R.E.M., The Replacements, They Might Be Giants, Camper Van Beethoven, the Violent Femmes and the Pixies, and British bands such as The Cure, The Smiths and Echo and the Bunnymen, as pioneers.
Thats how alternative rock came to be. I have always considered Radiohead alternative. Nirvan, Alice In Chains have all been considered Alternative and rightly so. Led Zepplein and Boston and the Beatles i wouldnt say they are alt.
Alternative wont die as long as ppl listen to the greats Nirvana, Alice in CHains, REM, etc etc. The 80’s and 90’s had some great alt music
