Jones decided to personally lead an assault on an entrenched machine gun nest at the crest of a low spur. Followed by his bodyguard, Sergeant Norman, his signaller, Sergeant Blackburn and several officers in his TAC 1 party, including Captains Dent and Wood, he charged the Argentine position. Sgt. Norman recalls calling out to Jones to “watch your fucking back”, but Norman believes the OC either didn’t hear him, or chose to ignore him] In a documentary filmed after the war, Norman believes that Jones chose to ignore him, as that was his style of leadership.[citation needed] It must be noted that on many training exercises in the UK, Jones had been declared ‘KIA’ by the umpires during several mock battles, for precisely the same reasons Jones ran into a small re-entrant (a dip between two hills) and carried on running up to the crest towards the machine gun position. After stopping to reload his submachine gun halfway up the hill, he pushed on, only to be shot in the back by 2 rounds .
Lt Col Jones indeed acted in the manner as detailed. However, it is noted that he prior ignored shouts to have the enemy position cleared i.e. mortared and machine gunned before the assault. His lone assault was not necessary and complete foolhardy! He being shot in the neck running past a concealed enemy position – totally exposed – and thus presenting a target no one could possibly miss! He died a few minutes after being shot! The position ultimately cleared, with the loss of other para’s!
His action was witnessed by others, myself included. In my opinion, it was a complete and utter waste of his life – totally futile! Later visits by senior officers to the spot where he fell, concluded the same opinion, i.e. he was too hasty and being pinned down as elements of his command then were, he should have ordered flanking movements to overcome the enemies position!
There was nothing heroic in his death, nor did he deserve the VC he was awarded! Men died, were seriously crippled and/or maimed for life, for no purpose whatsoever. Had he have survived, in all probability he would have been court martialled for reckless behaviour i.e throwing away the lives of those men who unnecessarily perished with him!
