Brothers Quilt
This 80 year old quilt my grandmother made is falling apart, what could be done to save it?

she made it out of old shirts from my dad and his brothers, i remember her pointing to material and telling me whose shirt it had been. Some material is still fine while other is disintegrating. Should it just be given a decent burial since it served it’s purpose?

The quilt CAN be saved, the question is how much effort and expense it would take. One place to start would be with an appraisal by an AQS-certified appraiser (link to current list below) – in my area appraisals cost about $40-$50 each. An appraisal is proof of value for insurance claims, but more importantly, the appraiser can recommend the best way to handle the quilt’s injuries.
For a ’sentimental-value’ quilt, the best approach is usually to cut pieces of compatible fabric, applique them over the disintegrating pieces and re-quilt as needed. As long as repairs are done in an easily-reversible manner, they generally don’t affect its monetary value, and a home-sewist can easily do them.
For a more valuable piece, it may be more appropriate to conserve rather than restore the quilt, and more specialized (and expensive) skills may be needed to maintain its value.
If the quilt is just too damaged to try to fix, there are other ways to keep the family history in your life. It can be re-cut into doll quilts, used to make stuffed bears or other animals, sections can be cut and framed, throw-pillows can be made out of any larger salvageable pieces, and even smaller pieces can make a cuddly vest for a teddy bear. Future generations will be glad if you put labels on the pieces explaining their history. Good luck with your heirloom.
