Buying childrens bunk beds can be a fun prospect for the children but a stressful job for the parent. At first the parent may have their reservations in purchasing a bunk bed but then after some time to consider their options shopping around for bunk beds is their next level of stress. Which one should they buy and what do they need to consider when buying a new bunk bed? Of course there are a few rules and regulations you would need to adhere to before buying the bed.

First of all you need to ask yourself whether your child or children are old enough for a bunk bed. The safest age for a new bunk bed is from the age of 6 and upwards, but this does not mean that they are any less at risk of injuring themselves if they are ‘old enough’. Even teenagers have injured themselves from sleeping on the top bunk. Of course half of the reasons behind these injuries are due to children fooling around, however sometimes this can be caused by children falling off accidentally.

These days’ childrens bunk beds are much safer than ever before, because they are made with better materials, improved structure, better design and some with guard rails. As the parent buying the bunk bed it is up to you to prepare your children to the dangers of using a bunk bed and setting down some ground rules. These rules should be made rigid, giving examples of what could happen if they were to misuse the beds in any way. It may even be a good idea to show them how to use the ladder safely and how not to lean on the bed.

When inspecting bunk beds it is a good idea to make sure that any gaps between the guard rail and the mattress is no more than 5 inches. This is to make sure that your child does not slip through at any point. You should also look into filling any gaps or finding ways to prevent the mattress from slipping about and keeping it secure in place.

You will need to decide on whether you would like a wooden frame bed or metal frame bed. Metal is stronger, more rigid and its shape does not warp during seasonal changes. Wood is more aesthetically appealing, suits nearly all decors and is much more comfortable. Solid may last longer unlike manufactured cheap woods. If you do buy a wooden bed then you should aim for natural solid woods such as pine.

Finally you need to determine how much weight the top bunk can take. Childrens bunk beds are designed to be sturdy, but they may also be designed to only take on certain amount of weight meaning it is not adult friendly. Always test the bed out and buy something that will take a fair amount of pressure.
