Classic French Literature?
What are some classic French novels that are a part of popular culture? Thanks!
In addition to the works of Alexandre Dumas, those of Victor Hugo (”The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, “Les Miserables”) and Edmond Rostand’s play “Cyrano de Bergerac” are frequently seen in popular culture. Aside from the film and musical versions of them, I’ve seen them pop up in random stuff like “Seinfeld”.
Also, you may want to check out Voltaire’s “Candide”, Gustave Flaubert’s “Madame Bovary”, and Moliere’s work (as long as you can do plays as well as novels). I’m not sure if they’re as big a part in modern popular culture as the aforementioned, but they certainly have left a legacy in that area.
