Full Quilt

Is it more cost effective to buy quilt its or just the patterns?
Hi everyone, another quilting question from me
Just wondering if people have found it cheaper to buy quilting kits (with fabric, patterns etc included) or buying just the patterns cheaper (and then heading off and buying fabric etc yourself).
The full kit to make a baby quilt is 280 Australian dollars the pattern alone is 88 australian dollars what do you think?
It depends – do you really love the quilt exactly as it’s kitted up? If you do, you might as well buy the kit. If you love the pattern but don’t necessarily love the fabrics, then stick with just the pattern. Also, if you tend to collect things, you might be better off to buy the patterns instead of the kits. Some quilters (myself included) tend to fall in love with projects easily, and then not finish them. I have an enormous fabric stash as it is, and if I’d bought the kit for every pattern that I liked, I wouldn’t have room left for my sewing machine.
I’m surprised at the cost of the kit and pattern. In US dollars, the kit is about $198 and the pattern is about $62. That’s an awful lot. Does the pattern include more than just instructions? The most expensive pattern I’ve seen is around $40 US and it includes about 20 iron on transfers for redwork. You could always try to figure out the pattern yourself instead of buying it. I seldom purchase patterns anymore. If I see a quilt I like, I ask permission to photograph it (except in a quilt shop – I would never expect them to let me take a picture if they’re selling a pattern) or I sketch out the basic design. At home I recreate it in my EQ6 software, although you can accomplish the same thing with pencil, paper, and a little extra effort.
