Queen Red
Why did Carroll in Through the Looking-Glass make the Queen red instead of black?
*** I’m talking about the Red Queen, not the Queen of Hearts. If you don’t know the difference, you don’t know the answer to my question. ***
For the book Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There, why did Carrol make the Queen red instead of black? In chess, the pieces are black and white. Alice’s kittens are also black, Kitty, and white, Snowdrop. Why did he make the queen red? Was there a reason? Thanks.
Well, this is just my undergraduate Lit major guess and it has been a while since I have read that novel, but because Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There is mainly a story about the loss of innocence, and the Red Queen (if I remember correctly) is juxtaposed by the White Queen, and they are both women…Red would be the color of someone who has lost their innocence. Red is usually a color associated with blood and, when compounded with a woman, is used to represent the types of blood that end innocence such as menstruation or intercourse. This is not saying that the Red Queen is a hussy or anything like that, but that she is the embodiment of this loss of innocence rather than the embodiment of evil, which would be black. This would also work with the Queen of Hearts, especially taking into account her affinity with blood.
Blood sometimes is also used to talk about madness and insanity so that could be a reason for the Motif. I could not find anything on Spark Notes but if you want to find out you can always look at some online databases that some colleges and libraries have to find the answer.
Also, it may be important to remember that, while Carrol has thematic issues he wished to address, he was a laudanum addict and was possibly slightly mad himself…so, as Freud once said, “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar” and in this case, sometimes red is just the color red.
