How to successfully grow African violets All Year
The African violet (Saintpaulia) first headed the plant popularity polls pot, a dozen years ago and has held first place since, with each year bringing an increasing number of friends.

So with a little extra care in fertilization, you can grow your Saintpaulias to perfection in this easy to make "synthetic" potting mix: equal parts of shredded sphagnum, peatmoss, and sand. Plants grown in this must receive applications of liquid fertilizer every few weeks.
A monthly application of M teaspoon dried, processed, sheep manure worked into the mix of plants in 4 inch pots will enhance their development. Use less manure for small pots, more for larger. Some growers like to mix loam, peatmoss, and sand and a bushel of this mixture, add a potful superphosphate 4-inch and 6-inch pot of dried sheep manure.
Soil or synthetic mixtures should be sterilized. If you are planting in the type loam, without the need to put drainage material in the pot, with a mixture of soil that contains clay, drainage is a necessity. About 1 / 2 inch chips of pot to a 4-inch hole is quite wide.
Irrigation and Fertilization
Always water the plants with warm water. The leaves when the water was colder than the surrounding air strikes them. These white spots give the plants look sick.
